A child of the steel city who studied in Shenyang and came back — 'anything beats being outside' (1980s generation)

钢城子弟口述:去省会又回家(1980年代生,化名)

A 1980s-born child of an Angang worker who grew up in central Anshan going to the factory bathhouse, left for university in the provincial capital, and came back because 'home is in Anshan' — the…

Response collected July 2026

Description

The respondent was born in the 1980s to an Angang parent and grew up in central Anshan, knowing factory life first-hand — the family often talked about the plant, being an 'Angang person' felt like pride, and the strongest childhood memory is bathing at the Angang bathhouse. In the late 1990s the family felt 'some' change: the parents took early/internal retirement and income pressure rose, but the family did not move, and its hopes settled into 'stay in Anshan — if it doesn't work out, come home; anything beats being outside.' The respondent left for university in the provincial capital and returned because family and home are in Anshan, and now works in landscaping, calling this stay 'temporary' and a long-term return 'unlikely.' Among their peers more have left than stayed, mainly for job opportunities; what would bring the young back is jobs and wages. From the parents' generation they received endurance and hard work — but almost no concrete skills — and the parents wanted stability above all. They judge that old unit ties still matter, that the city's sense of pride is the memory most at risk of vanishing, and that an old-industry archive should above all keep old photos and objects. Hearing 'Angang' still triggers pride; outsiders' commonest misreading of Anshan is 'nothing but mines and pollution.' One word for the parents' relationship to Angang: '家' (home); for their own to Anshan: 'hometown — full of memory and a past.' No personal names, ID numbers, addresses, or phone numbers are present in the record.

Significance to the comparison

The stay-or-leave question embodied in one biography: a leave-and-return arc where 'home' outweighs opportunity even as the respondent judges long-term return 'unlikely' for their generation. Pairs with the archive's other 1980s-generation records on what the danwei's disappearance means for the children.
