An inspector who took over a father's post in August 1978: 'like coming home' (1950s generation)

鞍钢检查工口述:1978年接班进厂(1950年代生,化名)

A 1950s-generation respondent who entered Angang in August 1978 by taking over their father's post, working front-line as an inspector (检查工) while other family members were also at Angang. Skills…

Response collected July 2026

Description

The respondent, born in the 1950s, took over their father's post (接班) and started at Angang in August 1978, working 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a front-line inspector; family members were also at Angang. They learned the trade through unit training, personal trial-and-error and colleagues teaching one another — 'so much cannot be learned from books' — and count technical skill, care, experience and judgment as what mattered. Asked what the unit was, they ticked every option: a job, one big family, a community, an identity. Their restructuring-era path shows several stages ticked (stayed at post, changed posts, early retirement, left the unit, now retired), with income, medical/retirement, family and morale all affected. They stay connected through master-apprentice ties, have visited the Angang museum, hope the next generation does enter a big enterprise, and want them to remember 'to live and act honestly.' The unit, looking back, felt 'like coming home'; what outsiders miss is 'the spirit of treating the factory as home and giving selflessly.' No personal names remain in the record (one friend's name was replaced with a pseudonym marker).

Significance to the comparison

A textbook case of 接班 (post inheritance) — the family channel into the steel city — and of the danwei as total institution, told by someone whose whole family was inside it. The closing contrast between 'one unit for a lifetime' and how young people think anchors the archive's generational question.
