A child of the steel city who left for the south (1980s generation)

The counterpart to the child who stayed: born in the 1980s to a front-line Angang steelworker, this respondent studied computer science and followed their classmates south into the internet industry…

Response collected July 2026

Description

This respondent was born in the 1980s to a father who spent his life in front-line steelmaking at Angang — a man whose face, they say, fills with pride at the memory of the plant-building and production drives of his youth, and with ache at the shift work, the furnace heat, and the layoff storms of the 1990s. The childhood was the danwei's in full: a unit bungalow, the workers'-children primary school, the plant clinic, summer soda and watermelons carried home and shared with the neighbors, grain coupons and New Year benefits, and "the honor of being an Angang worker" poured in from the start. Then the father's shop cut deeply in the late 1990s; he was left waiting for work, income fell, and the family talked often about whether the children should stay. His conclusion became the record's title line: don't keep to the steelworks — but if it ever fails out there, Anshan and the family will catch you.

The respondent studied computer science, followed their classmates south after the exams, and works in internet software development in a first-tier city, settled long-term. They are precise about what the generation kept from the danwei — steadiness, discipline, safety-mindedness, a bottom line — and what it discarded: never bind your life to a single job; stability now means transferable skills, not one factory. Their word for their parents and Angang is 羁绊, a bond that cannot be cut; for themselves and Anshan, 故土 — native ground: "my feelings go home; my life travels far." Leaving, they insist, is not scorning home — it is a compromise with what the local industries can carry.

AEvery summer the plant issued cooling soda and watermelons; my father would carry a big bagful home after work and share it with the neighbors. When we fell ill we did not need an outside hospital — straight to the plant staff clinic, where registration and medicine were cheap and easy.

A[checked] Endurance of hardship; discipline; valuing stability; sharper about risk; don't depend on one unit alone [handwritten] Work steadily, endure, follow the rules. Having been through the turbulence of the nineties, they never advised me to bind my life to a single job — always leave a way out, and plan carefully against risk.

QDid your parents teach you specific work skills?

AMostly told stories rather than teaching technique

QIf they did tell you, usually what kind (no need for parameters or internal process)?

A[checked] Higher income; freer choices; less hardship [handwritten] Not to live by physical labor; to have more say over my career; not to be shut a lifetime inside a single plant; steady income, somewhat easier work.

AA little

QHow was the old work-unit community different from an ordinary city neighborhood today? (neighbors, mutual aid, acquaintance society, children's environment...)

AThe old Angang family courtyards were all workmates of many years. Neighbors carried each other — if one family struggled, the whole block lent a hand; the children played in packs and the grown-ups watched them together. In today's commercial housing the neighbors do not know each other. There is no collective belonging, none of that familiar mutual help.

QHearing 'Ansteel' / 'Steel City', what is your first reaction?

A[checked] Nostalgia; hardship; closeness [handwritten] It is the ground of my childhood, holding most of a lifetime of my parents' sweat. Warm memories — and a clear knowledge of what their generation carried.

QAre these places useful for young people?

ASome use; mainly commemorative

QWhich memories do you think are most likely to disappear?

A[checked] Old neighborly ties; the unit way of life; the worker's sense of identity [handwritten] The plant's all-inclusive collective life and the courtyards' pattern of mutual help are slowly disappearing. It is hard for the young generation to feel what "one plant, one family" was.

QIf an 'Anshan old-industry memory' archive were built, what do you think should most be preserved?

A[checked] Ordinary workers' stories; family members' and children's stories; old photos and objects; what those who left Anshan think [handwritten] Beyond production records, preserve the oral accounts of workers' families and children, and the tangled feelings of the young who left — record the industrial city's generational change whole.

QHas your family kept any objects related to Ansteel / the work unit? (multiple choice)

A[checked] Family experience; the city's history; how hard it was for the parents' generation; don't forget home [handwritten] Tell the next generation the history of Anshan's industry, and make them understand what the grandparents and parents gave. And tell them the times are different — they have more choices, and need not be bound to heavy industry.

QDo you hope the next generation will stay in Anshan?

AUp to them

QDo you hope the next generation enters manufacturing/engineering/steel/energy-related industries?

ADepends on their interests

QHas the meaning of a 'stable job' changed between your generation and your parents' generation?

A[checked] Changed greatly [handwritten] To my parents, stability meant a lifetime in a state factory, with the unit carrying your whole life. To my generation it means transferable skills — able to stand anywhere, bound to no single company or city.

QIn the eyes of your generation, what is 'leaving one's hometown'?

A[checked] Complicated — cannot be put simply [handwritten] Leaving is not scorning home; it is for more chances to grow. The heart stays tied to the old ground, but in plain fact the local industries cannot carry a young career. It is a compromise with reality.

QIn one word, how would you describe the relationship between your parents' generation and Ansteel? Why?

AJiban — a bond that cannot be cut. Angang held their youth, their livelihood, all their human ties. Their lives leaned on the plant, and even through the pain of the layoffs, the feeling for the steelworks could not be severed.

QIn one word, how would you describe your own relationship with Anshan? Why?

AGutu — native ground. Anshan is where I grew up, with family and childhood memory; but with limited room for a career, I could only settle away. My feelings go home; my life travels far.

QWhat do you think outsiders or young people most easily misunderstand about Anshan?

AMany people think Anshan is only old heavy industry — bad environment, left behind. They do not know the complete history of collective worker life here, and they do not see the city already changing.

QHow do you think our generation, when doing research, should understand your parents' generation more respectfully?

ADo not judge them only through the lens of historical change. Listen more to how ordinary people actually lived. Understand both the helplessness and the steadfastness of lives that depended on the factory — the hardship together with the glory.

Significance to the comparison

The deliberate counterpart to OHS-AS-101, the 1980s-born child of the steel city who stayed: the same generation, the same courtyards, the opposite choice. Between them the two records map the fork that the 1990s restructuring set before the steel city's children — and this respondent's closing request sets terms for how research should treat the parents' generation: hold the hardship together with the glory.
